FUL Hosts Workshop on Enhancing Teaching Excellence for Academic Staff

In a significant move to enhance academic standards, the Faculty of Education, Federal University Lokoja organized a comprehensive workshop focused on improving teaching and learning effectiveness.
The event which held at the Multipurpose Hall, Felele Campus on Tuesday, January 21, 2024, with the theme: “Enhancing University Lecturers’ Requisite Knowledge and Skills For Effective Teaching And Learning” brought together academic staff from across various faculties and departments of the institution.
The Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. David Kolawole Omole, opened the workshop with a compelling address highlighting the critical role of continuous professional development in maintaining academic excellence. He emphasized the faculty's commitment to fostering innovative teaching methodologies and creating an environment conducive to both teaching and learning.
The Chairperson of the organizing Committee, Prof. (Mrs) Hassana Oseiwu Ali, delivered a warm welcome address that set the tone for the day's proceedings. She outlined the workshop's objectives, emphasizing the importance of enhancing pedagogical skills and adapting to evolving educational landscapes in the 21st century.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, who was represented by Prof. S.D. Musa, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, described the workshop as timely as it aligned with the university's vision for excellence. He emphasized the institution's dedication to teacher enhancement and the creation of opportunities for knowledge sharing among faculty members.
The workshop featured Prof. Maicibi Alhas Nok as the first presenter. He delivered an insightful presentation on "Managerprenuerialship of a Lecturer: Do's and Don'ts." His discussion centered on the three M's of management - money, materials, and men - providing practical insights into effective resource management in academic settings.
Prof. (Mrs) Kehinde Victoria Fatokun, the second presenter, addressed "The Teacher and Teaching Methods." Her presentation emphasized the importance of continuous self-development and the adoption of innovative teaching approaches. She strongly advocated for the provision and optimal utilization of digital resources to enhance learning outcomes.
The third session featured Dr. Onimisi, presenting on behalf of Prof. Titus Amodu Umoru, who delivered a comprehensive lecture on "Ethics of Teaching Profession." The presentation covered crucial aspects of professional conduct, academic integrity, and the responsibilities of educators in shaping future generations.
Prof. Rafiu Ademola Olatoye, the fourth presenter, provided valuable insights into "Practical Procedures for Conducting Tests and Examinations." His session offered practical guidance on assessment methodologies and maintaining academic standards in evaluation processes.
The question-and-answer session that followed generated substantial discussion, with participants noting that such sessions should come regularly especially at the beginning of every session. The dialogue provided opportunities for clarification and deeper exploration of the presented topics.
Addressing concerns raised during the discussion, the Vice Chancellor’s representative, Prof. Musa emphasized the university's strict stance on staff-student relationships. He specifically highlighted the administration's zero-tolerance policy regarding inappropriate relationships between lecturers and students, referencing a recent gender awareness campaign by the Institute of Gender Studies.
The Vice Chancellor's representative stressed the importance of maintaining professional ethics and boundaries, emphasizing the phrase "doing the right things and doing things right." This message resonated strongly with the workshop's overall theme of professional development and ethical conduct.
The event concluded with the distribution of certificates of attendance, recognizing the participants' commitment to professional development and teaching excellence.
