Former Army Chief, RTD. Lt. Gen. Dambazau Delivers Public Lecture in FUL Entitled: “NIGERIA AND HER SECURITY CHALLENGES: REVISITED”

The former Chief of Army Staff and former Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Abdulrahman Dambazau CFR Ph.D has delivered an enlightening and thought-provoking Public Lecture on the topic: "NIGERIA AND HER SECURITY CHALLENGES: REVISITED" at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Thursday, 4th November, 2021.

RTD. Lt. Gen. Dambazau’s public lecture centered on the topical issues of National Security and its strategy, Nigeria’s national security categorization, and existential threats to Nigeria’s national security. He equally delved extensively into the triggers and drivers of insecurity in Nigeria, taking into cognizance the pressures from the Sahel and Lake Chad Regions on Nigeria’s security environment.

In his presentation, the former Army Chief gave the effects of insecurity on Nigeria, challenges of tackling insecurity, while providing a holistic approach to tackling insecurity in Nigeria such as good governance, socio-economic development, proper administration of justice, and conflicts management mechanisms.

Other strategies of confronting insecurity in Nigeria as elucidated by the Retired Army General also comprise strategic communications and counter-narratives, aggressive intelligence and counter-intelligence approach, effective policing and the use of force, as well as strengthening regional and global partnerships.

“The challenges of insecurity in Nigeria are multidimensional and complex requiring a holistic, comprehensive and all-encompassing strategy to deal with,” he remarked.

He added that security is everyone’s business, and urged the youths to use social media innovatively instead of using it negatively to fan the embers of disunity, noting that he owes it as a duty to give back to the society that made him rise from nobody to somebody.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, who had received the Guest Lecturer in his office at the Adankolo Campus, thanked him for finding time out of his tight schedules to come to FUL to deliver the all-important and all-inclusive lecture, describing the topic as very apt.

The event which took place at the University Auditorium, Adankolo Campus had in attendance heads of various security agencies in Kogi State, Principal Officers of the University, Provost, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments/Units, Staff, Students, Friends and other members of the University Community.

Highlights of the epoch-making event included the presentation of the Public Lecture Certificate, Medal, Plaque, and Souvenir to the Guest Speaker by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, while the Registrar, Mr. Usman Suleman Obansa gave the vote of thanks.
