Okun members of staff and students of the Federal University Lokoja under the aegis of the Okun Development Association have warned mischief-makers to desist from “unrealistic character assassination” against the personality of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi.

The group gave a stern warning during a solidarity march in support of their son and third Vice-Chancellor of the University following a recent publication on some online media accusing the distinguished professor of history and renowned scholar of international repute of sexual scandals and drunkenness.

Addressing pressmen after a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor on Friday, 18th February 2022 at the Felele Campus to reassure him of their support, the Chairman of the Association, Professor M. N Suleiman noted that the baseless allegations were the handiwork of some disgruntled individuals who were intimidated by the monumental and unprecedented achievements of the Vice-Chancellor within one year in office. He added that such negative individuals with retrogressive mindsets should desist from distracting the performing Vice-Chancellor.

The group while reinstating their unflinching support for the Vice-Chancellor whom they described as easygoing and unassuming, urged him not to be discouraged by those who were hell-bent on disparaging and maligning his noble and unblemished character.
The group which comprised distinguished professors, senior staff, and students of Yoruba extraction (Okun) charged the Vice-Chancellor to ignore peddlers of falsehood and continue his untiring efforts towards building a world-class university that will be a cynosure of every eye.

The press statement which was signed by the group Chairman reads:

“Sequel to the negative narrations on the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja by some people who are intimidated by his unrelenting efforts to put Federal University Lokoja on the right path, we the Okun staff members of Federal University Lokoja is using this medium to inform the public that, we are not tolerating this act of character assassination on our son, brother, father and grandfather.

“He has been on his toes to see that Federal University Lokoja progresses, and which has been manifesting already just within a year of assumption of office; great NUC ranking, accreditation of all programmes, expansion of the university operations by the creation of more directorates and sustained industrial harmony.

“Although we are not against anyone or group appealing or seeking any legitimate redress, it must not be done to distract our performing Vice-Chancellor. He has brought peace to Federal University Lokoja, a sense of belonging and purposeful leadership devoid of tribal or religious sentiments.

“On this note, we say enough is enough!!! Stop your unrealistic character assassination and join the moving train of progress.”
When the newsmen asked for his reaction to the peddlers of the negative report, the people's Vice-Chancellor simply responded, "Tell them to continue, they will only keep me on my toes."
