The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, FUL, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, on September 24, 2024, inaugurated the 8th Students' Union (SU) executive and a new Student Representative Council (SRC) for the University. During the inauguration which took place at the Council Chambers of the College of Health Sciences, Adankolo, the VC challenged the newly elected student leaders to embrace responsible leadership, drive innovation in student governance and engagement, and actively contribute to enhancing the campus security.

In his address, Professor Akinwumi underscored the critical role of student leadership in shaping the university experience and prepare future leaders for the multifaceted challenges of tomorrow. "As you step into these pivotal roles, remember that leadership extends beyond titles. It's about making a tangible, positive impact on your fellow students' lives, the broader university community, and ensuring a safe environment for all," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor outlined key areas of focus for the new executive committee to include; Transparent Governance, Campus Security, Academic Excellence, Innovation in Student Services, Community Engagement, and Sustainable Campus Initiatives. Addressing the critical issue of campus security, Professor Akinwumi's tone grew sombre as he recalled a recent tragedy that had cast a shadow on the university community, saying: "It is with a heavy heart that we reflect on the recent loss of one of our own to the nefarious activities of 'yahoo plus' criminals. May her soul rest in peace."

Consequently, the VC issued a clarion call to the newly sworn-in student leaders: "In light of this painful event, I charge you with an even greater responsibility. The safety and well-being of our campus community must be your utmost priority. Work hand-in-hand with our Security Unit, not just as liaisons, but as proactive partners in safeguarding our students. Launch comprehensive awareness campaigns to educate your peers about the dangers lurking both on and off campus. Be vigilant; and serve as the eyes and ears of your fellow students." Similarly, other speakers at the auspicious event, charged the new student leadership to uphold the Institution's core values and promote unity among the students.

In his acceptance speech, the new Student Union President, Comrd. Benjamin Timothy, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in the new executive. He pledged to work tirelessly to meet the high expectations of the University Management and the student community. "We are honoured to take on this responsibility and are committed to serving our fellow students with utmost integrity, dedication, innovation, transparency, and accountability. Ensuring the safety and well-being of every student will be at the forefront of our agenda," he assured while highlighting his vision and priorities.

As the 8th SU leadership begins its tenure following the inauguration, the University community looks forward to a productive collaboration, innovative student initiatives, enhanced student welfare and security, and responsible leadership that will promote students' interests, foster a conducive learning environment, academic excellence, as well as elevate students' experience at the Federal University Lokoja.
