Professor Dauda Tanko has been appointed to chair the Welfare Committee of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) constituted by the Vice-Chancellor to ensure the welfare of staff and other members of the University community, particularly in light of the current economic challenges and the rising cost of living faced by Nigerians.
The appointment was announced during the last Senate meeting which was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, who also serves as the Senate Chairman. The committee comprises other distinguished members of the University community.
To ensure that the Welfare Committee carries out its mandate and operations smoothly, the Vice-Chancellor has promised to provide seed money from the University's Consultancy Services and Ventures as a takeoff fund to assist members in dire need.
Recall that the Consultancy Services and Ventures was established by the VC immediately after he assumed office in 2021 to drive the business arm of the University and improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to meet the ever-increasing needs of the thirteen-year-old Institution, considering the dwindling and abysmal low funding of Universities by the Federal Government.
Professor Akinwumi has identified some key areas for the committee to concentrate on, including food intervention, loans for staff to pay children's school fees, transportation, and waiver for staff undergoing postgraduate programmes in the University, among other areas of support and responsibilities the committee is saddled with.
This commendable gesture by the University Management, no doubt, has further underscored the administration's commitment to the welfare of staff and students as highlighted in the Vice-Chancellor's vision plan which he unveiled to the University community upon assumption of office. Also, these welfare packages, if properly managed and channeled in the right direction, will provide great relief to members who are going through difficulties in meeting their basic needs as a result of the fuel subsidy removal and rising inflation as well as other attendant effects of the policy.
Professor Tanko, who is currently the Chairman of FUL Multipurpose and Cooperative Society and Chairman of FUL Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), an arm of the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) domiciled in the University, is expected to bring his expertise, understanding of university community, and wealth of experience to bear as he leads the Institution's first-ever Welfare Committee, and complement Management's efforts. The committee is to be inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor next week.
