The Chief Judge of Kogi State, Hon. Justice Josiah Majebi has commended the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, for his visionary leadership and developmental strides, particularly for establishing the Faculty of Law in the University. Justice Majebi gave the commendation when he led other High Court judges from the State on a visit to the Institution on 3rd October 2024, in support of the new programme.

The Chief Judge extolled the Vice-Chancellor’s humility and the positive developments he has attracted to FUL since assuming the top position. He commended the Vice-Chancellor for taking the bold step in establishing the Law programme and working relentlessly towards ensuring that the programme comes to life during his tenure as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Justice Majebi, who described the VC as a selfless leader, equally thanked members of the University Management for their commitment and cooperation, most especially for being supportive of the Vice-Chancellor’s vision and developmental drives.

While dismissing some misconceptions about the legal profession, the Chief Judge, admonished every family to strive to have at least a lawyer in their midst, highlighting the benefits, opportunities, and respect that the noble profession commands. He noted that the establishment of Law in FUL would go a long way in advancing legal education and contribute to the overall development of the judiciary in Kogi State and Nigeria at large, assuring the University of his full support.

He promised to set up a technical committee to provide professional advice for the new programme, as well as mobilize other judges to donate books that would assist the Faculty to meet the requirements set out by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, expressed appreciation to Justice Majebi and other High Court judges for identifying with Federal University Lokoja. While thanking the Chief Judge for his continued support, the VC also reiterated his commitment to making the Faculty of Law at FUL one of the best in the North Central region.

He highlighted some of the efforts put in place so far towards ensuring that the University gets the approval of the CLE, adding that there are some things that still needed to be done and therefore solicited the support of the Chief Judge.

Professor Akinwumi went down memory lane to narrate how his father was passionate about him studying Law at the university, despite his stepmother’s negative impression of the profession, but ended up being a historian instead by divine orchestration. He said that his father’s dream was however fulfilled a few years ago when his first daughter graduated as a Lawyer.

The Vice-Chancellor appreciated God for giving him the privilege as a sitting Vice-Chancellor to establish the Law programme thereby satisfying that inherent desire to contribute to the advancement of legal education.

During the meeting, the judges took turns lending their support and offering valuable advice on how the University Management could make the programme more successful, including areas of collaboration. One of the female judges emphasized the importance of discipline and good moral conduct by the law students including their way of dressing.

Following the meeting which held in the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee Room and attended by the Principal Officers, Justice Majebi led other team of judges to inspect the Faculty of Law building which houses a moot court, library, and other facilities. See more pictures here
