The Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the pioneer established Departments of the Institution approved to take-off in the 2012/2013 Academic Session with the admission of thirty (30) students, eight (8) Academic Staff and one (1) non-academic staff, with Dr. Ibrahim Adeku Musa (Senior Lecturer in Mathematics) on Sabbatical from ABU Zaria as the first Acting Head of Department. Four more administrative staff were posted to the Department later in the year.
In December, 2013, three (3) Academic staff; one Professor of Optimization, one Senior Lecturer of Numerical Analysis, one Assistant Lecturer joined the Department. Another set of 28 students were admitted into the Department for the 2013/2014 Academic Session. The curriculum was updated in 2013/2014 Academic Session. The update strictly follows the dictates of the approved NUC Benchmark for Minimum Academic Standards for undergraduate programmes in Nigerian Universities. Also, 34 students were admitted into the Department for the 2014/2015 Academic Session. Professor J. O. Omolehin took over from Dr. Ibrahim A. as the substantive Head of Department in December 2013.

Mission Statement
The specific mission of Department of Mathematics is summarized below:
- to instil in students sense of enthusiasm for Mathematics, appreciation of its application in all areas and to involve them in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying;
- to provide students with broad and balanced foundation in Mathematics knowledge and practical skills in Statistics.
- to develop in students the ability to apply their Mathematical knowledge and skills to solve theoretical and practical problems in Mathematics and other areas in relation to National and Societal needs;
- to develop in students, through the education of Mathematics, a range of transferable skill of value in Mathematical related and Non-Mathematical related employment;
- to provide students with knowledge and skills, from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of Mathematics or multi-disciplinary areas involving Mathematics; and
- to generate in students and appreciation of the importance of Mathematics to non-subject specific competence, ICT capability, communication skills, interpersonal skill and organizational skills.
Vision
The vision of the programme is to produce high level Mathematicians equipped with icon of knowledge necessary for the exploration of the environment through research.
Phylosophy
It is universally acknowledged that Mathematics is the bedrock of all scientific and technological breakthrough and advancement, instituting a most potent and avoidable tool for the proper resolution of problems and theories associated with the diverse disciplines in science and technology. Mathematics is a discipline that is hydra-headed and concerns itself with the; Methods of discovering certain universal truths and Nature of the truth being applicable.
The Department aspires to train academically sound future researchers and intellectuals in the area of Mathematics and Statistics.
