The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, has charged members of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology to remain committed to producing engineers whose competence and skills will stand out globally.
Prof. Ibileye gave the charge on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, during the opening ceremony of a two-day in-house professional training workshop on "Implementing Outcome-Based Education for Accreditation of Engineering Programmes" held at the Engr. Makoju Lecture Theatre, Felele Campus.
Describing the initiative as laudable, the Vice Chancellor commended the leadership of the Faculty for taking proactive steps towards ensuring quality engineering education.
The Vice Chancellor noted that the Faculty has continued to distinguish itself as one of the University's most innovative academic units, recalling its impressive presentation during the 4th Memorial Lecture in honour of Engr. Makoju and praising its leadership for demonstrating vision, dynamism and commitment to excellence.
According to him, the adoption of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) represents a strategic effort to align engineering programmes with global best practices and ensure that graduates possess the knowledge, skills and competencies required to compete favourably anywhere in the world.
Ibileye reiterated the commitment of the University administration to providing the facilities, equipment and support necessary for effective teaching and learning, disclosing that some of the laboratory and Information and Communication Technology equipment requested by the Faculty had already been provided to support the implementation of Outcome-Based Education.
He therefore urged members of the Faculty not to relent in their efforts but to continue working towards producing highly skilled engineers whose abilities would be recognised wherever they find themselves.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Engr. Dr. Monday Idako, welcomed participants and encouraged them to actively engage in all sessions, take advantage of the ten modules lined up for the training and share experiences that would enrich the learning process.
Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof. K. J. Simonyan, appreciated the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers and members of staff for their support and presence at the workshop.
The Dean said the training reflected the collective determination of the Faculty to build a premium engineering school equipped with modern facilities, safe workspaces and a culture of excellence, stressing that quality engineering education can only be achieved through deliberate effort and sustained commitment.
Delivering the keynote lecture, the resource person, Prof. J. A. Olorunmaiye, explained that Outcome-Based Education places emphasis on all stakeholders involved in the educational process and focuses on measurable learning achievements.
Olorunmaiye noted that the approach is anchored on graduate attributes and professional competence, encompassing the knowledge, skills and attitudes students are expected to possess upon completion of an engineering programme.
He further highlighted Programme Learning Outcomes as a key framework for assessing students' achievements and ensuring that graduates meet the expectations of the engineering profession and society.
In his goodwill message, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Chairman of the University Accreditation Committee, Prof. S. D. Musa, commended the Faculty for taking the initiative to prepare its staff ahead of accreditation exercises.
Prof. Musa observed that the training would significantly support the University's accreditation efforts and reduce the burden associated with compliance requirements, while urging members of staff to cooperate fully with the Faculty leadership to achieve the desired objectives.
In her vote of thanks, the Registrar, Dr. Rebecca Okojie, applauded the leadership of the Faculty for organising the workshop and described the participation of Prof. Olorunmaiye as a valuable addition to the University's capacity building efforts.
Dr. Okojie expressed confidence that the knowledge gained would strengthen the Faculty's readiness for accreditation and further advance the University's pursuit of excellence in engineering education.
The workshop was organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology as part of efforts to strengthen staff capacity and enhance preparedness for the forthcoming accreditation of engineering programmes. See more pictures here
