Welcome Address from the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Patrick Amidu Audu

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the School of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University Lokoja. The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) in the Federal University Lokoja is geared towards the realization of the ideals of the University and of higher education in shaping the perception, thinking, moral, physical and emotional demeanour and sensitivities of the educated man. Postgraduate studies emphasises research training which enables the researcher to have courage to venture into the unknown, to ask critical questions and fearlessly proceed to find answers to them. The researcher should have the intuition and originality of thought to break the barriers of mental inhibition and search for the extension of the frontiers of knowledge of new horizons.

In pursuance of these objectives, The School of Post-graduate Studies of Federal University Lokoja is conceived as a centre of research excellence which is central to the academic mission and vision of the University and a major step towards the pursuit of academic goals.

The Principles for establishing the School are in tandem with the statutes that established Federal University Lokoja as conceptualized by its founding fathers. A Key point in their idea of a University and the training of young people is a formation process which holistically ensures that graduates of Federal University Lokoja are brought up imbibing strong virtues of integrity, humility, hard work, discipline and creativeness. The School is conceived to promote these core values in the engagement of teaching, research and community service.

Philosophy
The Philosophy of the Federal University Lokoja, School of Postgraduate Studies shall be to provide solutions to the problem of dearth of qualified academics with relevant postgraduate qualifications required for the human resources development of the country. The School is highly committed to providing a platform for creativity, scholarship, entrepreneurship, enquiry, personal initiative and integrity for achieving the University’s goal of being the best among the newly established Universities in Nigeria.

Vision
In line with the vision of the University to be the best among the newly established Federal Universities, the School of Postgraduate Studies promises to become a major centre of excellence for postgraduate training in research, scholarship and special skills acquisition for the provision of solutions to contemporary society’s big problems:  responsible stewardship of the environment, and so on.

Mission:
Through research and training, the mission of the school is to become a world class Postgraduate School making the University to provide advanced educational opportunities that focus on sustainable human resources development through sound instructions in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences.

The University provides a conducive atmosphere for our students, as well as seasoned academics that teach and supervise them as they go through the writing of their project reports and theses. There are lecture rooms and well-equipped computer laboratories for our students, in order to ensure that they get the best out of their studies. The library is well-stocked library, including a virtual library from where our students also source materials. In addition, there are recreation facilities for students’ outdoor activities.

The SPGS Management, Board and Committees were inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Angela Freeman Miri on 4th October, 2017. The School is administered by a Management Committee headed by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Professor Patrick Amidu Audu who serves as the Chairman. Other members are the Secretary of SPGS, Mr. Nuhu Shamaki, the Accountant, Mr. James Onuh and the Auditor, Mr. Muhammed Jibrin. Also, there is a Board of School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS), headed by the Dean, Professor Patrick Amidu Audu who also serves as the Chairman.

The Vice Chancellor at the inauguration charged the Board to ensure timely completion of programmes by students. In his response on behalf of the Management and Board of the School, the Dean expressed commitment to the responsibility assigned.

The School of Postgraduate Studies will formally commence academic activities starting with Postgraduate Diploma programmes which spread across the various faculties. The School is determined to maintain high academic standards in line with best practices.
