The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) will be holding its 1st International Conference with the theme "Flood and Sustainable Development" at the College of Health Sciences Auditorium (Adankolo Campus) between 14th and 16th June, 2023.
Introduction
FLOOD AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster affecting most parts of the world today. Floods have caused widespread devastation that have resulted in the loss of lives and damage to properties and critical public infrastructure. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in the past few decades, floods have globally affected more than 2 billion vulnerable people who either live in floodplains or lack early warning systems and awareness of flooding hazards. Huge resources have been lost to flooding episodes globally, in 2021, America witnessed a devastating flood in Tennessee with properties worth over 101 million US dollars damaged.
The 2022 flood in Pakistan affected about 72 million people and caused about 14.9 billion US dollars in damages. In Nigeria, the 2022 flood was reported to have affected 34 of the 36 states; displaced over 1.4 million people, and killed 612 people. Over 200,000 homes and 110,000 hectares of farmland were completely or partially destroyed. Efforts must be harnessed to mitigate this extreme weather event which is occurring more frequently due to climate change. Lokoja is located at the confluence of the two major rivers in Nigeria and has been at the receiving end each time the country experienced massive flooding.
It is against this background that the Management of the Federal University Lokoja in collaboration with other organizations resolved to invite the Academic Community, Researchers, Development Agencies, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), and other stakeholders to an international conference on flood where ideas and on-going efforts to tackle the menace of floods shall be discussed.
