A multimillion Naira investment located opposite the Kogi State Board of Internal Revenue in Lokoja has been salvaged from total destruction through the timely intervention of a fire service truck belonging to Federal University Lokoja (FUL). The shop, which deals in merchandise like diesel, tyres, motor parts, batteries, and servicing of vehicles, among several others, was gutted by fire at about 5:00pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 (yesterday).
Through his gallantry and quick response, Mal. Gambo, the Chief Driver who drove the fire truck, was able to quench the inferno, and as a result, the entire neighborhoods were full of praise to the University and its Management for saving the property in particular and other nearby buildings that could have been greatly affected as a result of the fire disaster.
Members of the community lauded the initiative and foresight of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi for procuring the fire service truck to combat fire incidents within the two campuses of the University, and also to assist the host communities during emergencies as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Reacting to the incident was the Director of Fire Service, Kogi State who also eulogised the Vice-Chancellor for being visionary and thoughtful in procuring the important fire fighting equipment that is serving not just the University alone but also the host communities. He, however, sought the State Government's collaboration and assistance in fighting this type of occurrence in the State.
It would be recalled that on February 21, 2022, the Vice-Chancellor and his Management commissioned three vehicles including two (2) 18-seater buses (donated by Dr. Innocent Ozoemena Ezuma), and a fire service truck (procured by the University) for ease of transportation and fire safety in FUL.
As it is on record that there is no fire fighting truck in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital currently, members of the host communities can therefore seize the opportunity to reach out to the University for assistance in case of any fire emergencies.
