The Special Marshal Unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal University Lokoja (FUL) Chapter, has pledged full support to the Administration of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi as the third Vice-Chancellor of the University toward achieving his vision of repositioning FUL and moving it to an enviable height.

This was revealed when members of the FRSC Special Marshal Unit 019 (who are staff of the University), led by its Coordinator, SM Musa Omeiza Suberu, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor and his management team on 23rd May 2023.

In his opening address, the Unit Coordinator, who described Professor Akinwumi as God's chosen helmsman for FUL, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for carrying everybody along in his bid to transform the Institution and make it one of the best in Nigeria and the world at large.

"We greatly appreciate our amiable God-chosen Vice-Chancellor for your tireless work and desire to carry everybody in the University community along in your transformational agenda in making Federal University Lokoja a source of unifying Kogi State particularly and making this University one of the best in Nigeria and the world at large.

"Federal University Lokoja, Federal Road Safety Corps, Special Marshal Unit was approved in February 2014. Since then we have been carrying out a weekly patrol on Campus to checkmate traffics and give public enlightenment to staff, students, and even the host Community.

"There is no doubt that the task before you is enormous, but we assure you as members of Federal University Lokoja Special Marshal that we shall give you our 100% support in achieving your ultimate goals to make this strategically positioned University a unifying force to bind the University together as one entity despite our diversities, in order to harness her divers abundant human and mineral resources that are still lying fallow and dormant.

"God has brought you into the scene to be a captain over this Institution for us to experience a drastic change in all facets of the campus. We are aware of your determination to transform this great University and we pray that God will grant you all the resources to achieve this," he remarked.

SM Suberu added that the team embarked on the visit to create awareness of their activities as members of the Special Marshal arm of the FRSC, Lokoja Command, which include traffic control within the University and around the metropolis of Lokoja town, sensitization on speed limits, accident and its causes and prevention, among other roles which have earned the Unit several commendations, from the supervising command of FRSC at both the State and Federal level, for their effective service delivery.

While soliciting more support, cooperation, and encouragement for the effective and smooth running of its activities, the group, however, made useful suggestions and recommendations on some road safety measures that could reduce accidents within and around the University, of which most times the staff and the students are the victims.

The Coordinator, therefore, urged Management to seek permission from the State Government to construct three (3) bumps on the right way when coming from the Specialist Hospital, and three (3) bumps on the other side from Radio Kogi before the University junction as both sides are prone to accidents; put zebra crossing at both campuses; construct overhead bridge across the highway at the Permanent Site for easy crossing at both sides of the road to minimize accidents, and walkways within the Felele Campus.

Responding to the remarks, the VC who was greatly impressed, thanked the Special Marshal Unit for being awake to its responsibilities and functions, assuring them of his unalloyed support at all times. He also directed the appropriate officers and units to commence implementation of those recommendations. Click here to see more pictures
