Commencement of Nursing Programme: Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria Paid Advisory Visit to FUL

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, paid an advisory visit to the Federal University Lokoja in preparation for the take-off of the Nursing programme in the University. This is coming as efforts to launch the B.Sc Nursing programme gained more momentum. 

A group of experts from various universities led by Dr. Oluwatotyin Ogunyewo, an Associate Professor from the Department of Nursing Science in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Technology, University of Jos, visited the University to inspect the level of preparedness for the commencement of the programme.

During the visit, the team discussed their specific objectives and gave valuable recommendations to assist the University Management achieve its plan of admitting students into the programme beginning from the next academic session. 

Dr. Oluwatoyin Ogunyewo, who led the team, expressed satisfaction over the caliber of personnel the Institution has engaged to kick-start the nursing programme in earnest.

Speaking to members of the delegation during a courtesy to his office, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor M.S. Audu and joined by other principal officers and management staff, expressed his willingness to ensure a smooth start for the B.Sc Nursing programme at FUL with strict adherence to the guidelines stipulated by the Council.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated his firm commitment to the 60/40 admission policy of science against programmes in the humanities which necessitated his special interest in the medical science programmes and sciences in general. 

"Nursing programme is a highly sought programme, and as my legacy project, I, and my management, would do everything within our power to ensure the smooth take-off," the VC maintained.

He continued, "I want to express our resolve to admit the first batch of nursing students as soon as possible, with the expectation that the advisory team would be impressed and happy with our level of preparedness."

Following the courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, the team was led to inspect the facilities designated for assessment by the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Hadi Suberu. He was accompanied by the Head of the proposed Nursing Department, Professor Abraham Dare Ajayi; the Deputy  Director, Academic Planning, Dr. Ayinla Habeeb Ayoola; the Director, University Health Services, Dr. Chinenye Otorkpa; and a host of others. 

Also, the team paid an unscheduled visit to Dr. Olatunde Alabi, Chief Medical Director (CMD), Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Lokoja, where they were warmly received. The CMD promised to continue working with the University - offering institutional support, and making all of the hospital's facilities available - toward ensuring that the nursing students receive top-notch training.

Similarly, the Head of Nursing at the FTH conducted the team around the facilities after which Dr. Oluwatoyin also expressed great satisfaction.

The Nursing Council's 3-man delegation was made up of Dr. Oluwatoyin Oguyewo, Dr. Kayode S. Olubiyi, and Ibilola Jolede. See more pictures here
