I hold MSc Geological and Environmental Hazard from University of Portsmouth, Postgraduate diploma in Mining Engineeringfrom Federal University of Technology, Akure and BSc. degree in Geology and Mining from University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. The studies covered a wide range of geoscience topics from physical geology, general petrology, mining geology and Environmental geology. Others are soil and rock mechanics, Volcanology and Geological and Environmental Hazards, Hazard modelling and Risk Assessment, with keen interest in soil and rock mechanics. I am currently pursuing PhD. in Engineering Geology at Nasarawa State University, Keffi to be more equipped in my quest to contribute to solutions in the challenging environment of the Earth, its utilization, the associated risk and hazards.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
MSc Geological and Environmental Hazards, University of Portsmouth, September 2013 – September 2014.
This is an advance, scientific and professional course accredited by the British Geological Society, London. Key modules taught and learnedincludes; Geotechnics and Groundwater,Volcanology and Seismology, Hazard Modelling and Risk Assessment, Landslides and slope instability, Geological and Environmental Hazards. These has equipped me with the advanced skills to carry out detailed investigations into surface and subsurface geology, identification of geological and environmental Hazards and modelling of these Hazards.
Core themes in Geotechnics and Ground water, Landslides/slope instability and Hazard modelling/ Risk Assessment have helped me to undertake study of 193 boreholes for Ground conditions, associated hazards and model same in an independent project using Excel, ArcGIS, Golden Surfer and Grapher.
I also gained more experience by writing a geotechnical report for Transport for London regarding the ground investigation of the Jubilee Line Extension Project, London using computer applications such as ArcGIS and Grapher. Geotechnical data for this report was provided by a third party. In addition, I investigated and model volcanic ash cloud of Mount Saint Helen volcanic eruption of 1980.
A 5 month research project titled ‘Ground Hazards and Weathering, the role of London lost Rivers’ was carried out.
Field Experience
- Isle of Wight, United Kingdom – Geotechnical descriptions of soil and rock masses and the stability of coastal cliff sections.
- Broadway, Cotswold, United Kingdom – Aerial photo interpretation and geomorphological mapping of landslides and slope stability.
- Sicily, Italy- Geological mapping to develop skills in recognizing and recording field data relevant to assessing geological and environmental hazards.
PGD Mining Engineering, University of Technology Akure, Nigeria, 2002-2004
Core courses undertook includes; Mine Reclamation and Environment, Oil and Gas well drilling Technology, Petroleum reservoir Engineering and Mining Methods. Others are; advanced mineral Economics, Mine Management and Law, Mine Design, strength of Materials and Engineering Mathematics.
Core themes From Mine Reclamation and Environment and contributions from the others made me developed interest in mining and associated pollution. This lead to a research project titled ‘Quarry production of Marble, associated Environmental Pollution and Control’.
BSc Geology and Mining, University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, 1994-1998
Core courses focusing on physical geology, petrology, economic geology, Geochemistry, mining geology, geophysics, mineral resources & environmental geology, optical mineralogy and basic geological techniques. This developed my skills using the Polarizing Trinnocular Microscope for identification of rock minerals on a thin section (slides). Alongside this, was a field and laboratory based research project titled; General Geology of Fadan-Sanya area, NE, Nigeria.
Field Experiences
- Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria – Mapping of the ‘Younger Granite’ of Nigeria and the associated volcanic terrain, recognition and identification of sedimentary structures using GPS, compass clinometers and ordinance survey maps.
- Gombe, NE, Nigeria- Mapping of the upper arm of the Benue River Basin and the associated sedimentary strata, vegetation, recognition and identification of sedimentary structures using GPS, compass clinometers and ordinance survey maps.
- Bauchi- Kaduna boundary, NE Nigeria- Field mapping for General Geology of Fadan-Sanya area, NE, Nigeria.
SSCE AND GCE ‘O’ Level,Government Secondary School Abejukolo- Iffe, Kogi State, Nigeria, 1985-1991, 2006
I achieved 8 credits in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from Government Secondary School Abejukolo- Iffe, and external GCE at Lokoja. The grades were in English Language, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography, Economics, Agricultural Science and Biology.
