In a groundbreaking academic discourse, a distinguished Professor of Accounting and Taxation, Professor Emmanuel Eneche Onoja, FCA has called for accountability, sustainability, and social justice as pillars of nation-building, as the Federal University Lokoja, FUL hosted its 23rd Inaugural Lecture, marking the first in the year 2025 and 21st in its series of scholarly presentations under the visionary leadership of Professor Olayemi Akinwumi as Vice-Chancellor.
The lecture titled: "Accountability, Sustainability and Social Justice: A Catalyst for Nation Building”, held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Adankolo campus of the University, drew attendance from various sectors of the society, including prominent political figures, distinguished scholars, members of the academic community, and business leaders from across the country.
During his presentation, Professor Onoja emphasized the intricate relationship between accountability, sustainability, and social justice in the nation-building process. He argued that these principles form the cornerstone of effective governance and democratic participation, citing his recent research work with Abdullahi (2023) on citizen participation in governance processes.
The distinguished professor of accounting and taxation stressed that governments shrouded in secrecy and corruption risk losing legitimacy from their citizens. He emphasized that genuine democratic dividends can only be delivered when citizens actively participate in governance beyond periodic elections, maintaining that such engagement is crucial for ensuring leadership accountability and program sustainability.
In a significant portion of his lecture, Professor Onoja elaborated on the interconnected nature of accountability, sustainability, and social justice. He explained how accountability fosters trust between government and citizens, while sustainability ensures responsible resource management for both present and future generations.
The lecture particularly emphasized the role of social justice in ensuring fair distribution of resources and opportunities, noting its importance in fostering social cohesion and strengthening democratic values. Professor Onoja presented these elements as crucial components of a holistic framework necessary for building a just and stable society.
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, emphasized the significance of inaugural lectures as more than mere academic rituals, describing them as moments of pride and intellectual fulfillment that showcase the depth of knowledge and research achievements of the institution's professors. “An inaugural lecture is not just an academic ritual; it is a moment of intellectual fulfillment,” Professor Akinwumi stated. “Today, we celebrate one of our finest scholars, whose work embodies the essence of scholarship that addresses critical societal needs.”
Professor Akinwumi highlighted the timeliness of the lecture's theme, noting its relevance to current national discourse on governance, sustainable development, and social equity. He commended Professor Onoja's scholarly contributions, both nationally and internationally, acknowledging his role in bridging the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applications in addressing critical societal needs.
Meanwhile, the event reached its climax with the presentation of awards to Professor Onoja. The Ejeh of Alamaboro Local Government Area, His Royal Highness Chief Simeon Ujah, presented a Certificate of Appreciation from FUL, while the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Dr. Folashade Arike Ayoade presented a Plaque of Honour on behalf of the University, adding ceremonial grandeur to the academic milestone.
The lecture generated substantial discourse among attendees, with many noting its relevance to current national challenges and the ongoing debate about governance reform in Nigeria. The presentation was particularly praised for its practical approach to combining academic theory with real-world applications.
In addition, the event showcased FUL's commitment to fostering intellectual discourse and contributing to national development through academic excellence. It also highlighted the institution's role in promoting research that addresses pressing national issues.
The success of this inaugural lecture sets a high standard for future academic presentations at Federal University Lokoja, reinforcing the institution's position as a center of excellence in academic research and intellectual discourse in Nigeria. See more pictures here
