As part of Management's efforts towards standardizing the conduct of examinations as well as ensuring that best practices were adopted before, during, and after any examination in Federal University Lokoja (FUL), a stakeholder's summit was organized on Wednesday, 25th January, 2023 at the College of Health Sciences (Adankolo Campus) to chart the way forward.

The summit which was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi was attended by all relevant stakeholders including Principal Officers, Provosts, Deans, Directors, Coordinators, Faculty Exam Officers, and Faculty Officers, among other academic and non-academic staff who are directly involved in the conduct of examinations in the University.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted some of the challenges identified from the previous examinations including the just concluded semester exams, and noted that the summit became necessary in order to appraise the current situation holistically with a view to addressing the recurring issues head-on.

He added that his administration was fully committed to finding a lasting solution to the challenges and ensuring the proper conduct of examinations while urging participants to be open-minded in contributing to the important discussion whose outcome and resolutions would be produced in the form of a manual to be presented to Senate for ratification.

Professor Akinwumi informed the participants of some of his personal efforts aimed at attracting developmental projects to the University. He thanked all the officers drawn from different academic and non-academic departments for honouring the invitation.

While opening the floor for deliberation, the Chairman, Examination Monitoring Committee and Ag. Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor S.D. Musa gave an in-depth background into the main purpose of the summit and centered his discussion on the pre, during, and post-examination processes where he outlined some challenges that needed urgent attention, saying all hands must be on deck in ensuring hitch-free and seamless conduct of subsequent examinations.

Professor S.D. Musa thanked the University Management under the dynamic leadership of Professor Akinwumi for taking the bull by the horns in rejigging the entire examination process and ensuring that best practices were adopted for the smooth conduct of examinations in FUL.

Some of the important issues discussed centered around unethical behaviours by both staff and students during examinations, infrastructural challenges, coordination and invigilation, monitoring, rules and regulations, punctuality, timetable planning and duration, venue and human resource management, welfare, unification, and standardization of exam questions, result processing, among several other topics.

The summit, which provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views, received appreciable contributions and presentations from different speakers who brought their vast experiences from other Universities to the round table. Speakers took turns to harp on the need for total commitment, reorientation/behavioral change by both staff and students, and motivation while proffering stringent sanctions for violators of the new guidelines once approved.
